Full Text RESOLUTION 09-30 DEVELOPING RELATIONS WITH THE MEDICAL AND PHARMACY SCHOOLS IN THE STATE OF HAWAI'I WHEREAS: Alaska Native people are severely underrepresented among health care professionals in Alaska; and WHEREAS: Academic institutions can playa vital role in addressing the disparities in education and career development; and WHEREAS: The John A. Burns School of Medicine at University of Hawai'i at Manoa and the University of Hawai' i at Hilo College of Pharmacy are committed to a diverse enrollment and faculty; and WHEREAS: The indigenous people of Alaska and Hawai'i share similar histories and traditions which can help bridge the cultural gap for Alaska Native students away from their home communities: and WHEREAS: The indigenous people of Alaska and Hawai'i can work together to demonstrate careers in medicine or pharmacy are realistic and achievable goals for Alaska Native and Native Hawai'i an peoples, and NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the delegates to the 2009 Annual Convention of the Alaska Federation of Natives Inc., that new opportunities must be sought out to increase the representation of Alaska Native people in health care professionals; and BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that AFN encourages stronger relationships with the university system in Hawai'i as part of the strategy to promote career advancements.
