Barrow boys win ACS InvitationalPublished on January 4th, 2010 By VAN WILLIAMS The Barrow High School boys basketball team got the season off to a whale of a start last week, claiming the championship in the three-day Anchorage Christian School Invitational. Barrow crushed Glennallen 67-41 in the title tilt Saturday. Led by Albert Gerke, the Whalers had four players reach double figures in the runaway victory. Gerke led all scorers with 17 points. Barrow also got 12 points from Bradley Nashaknik and 11 apiece from Victor Unutoa and Tyler Adams. The Whalers led 34-19 at halftime and never looked back. Earlier in the tournament, Barrow beat Valdez (59-53) in the first round and Nome (66-57) in the semifinals. The only other Northwest Arctic boys school that participated was Kotzebue, which avoided finishing last by defeating Delta Junction 58-45 in the seventh-place/eighth-place game. Tim Smith and Winter Jones each pumped in 15 points for the Huskies. On the girls side, the Lady Whalers advanced to the championship game of the ACS Invitational before dropping a 54-37 setback to the host Anchorage Christian Lions. Barrow fell into an early 14-7 deficit and never recovered. Freshman Lynette Heppa-all 6-foot-4 of her-led the way with 11 rebounds and several rebounds. Teammate Kivvaq Nungasak scored nine points on three 3-pointers. One of the team's highlights came in the opening round when Barrow scored a lopsided 75-7 win over the Anchorage Christian JV. The Kotzebue girls advanced to the third-place game before falling 45-38 to Petersburg. The Lady Huskies had four players score eight points or more.
