Bethel Heights Center construction complete

Bethel Heights Resident Service Center is ready for its community. An open house to celebrate the completion is set for 11 a.m. June 28.
Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) has completed construction of its new Bethel Heights Resident Service Center and will hold a grand opening on at 11 a.m. June 28 at 1029 Ridgecrest Drive.
The Bethel Heights Resident Service Center project received $2 million in funding in 2008, funds that were requested by AHFC’s board of directors and management in their capital budget, and supported by then Governor Sarah Palin. Office and maintenance space for Bethel’s Public Housing staff, as well as community space for residents of the 117-unit Bethel Heights family housing complex, will benefit from the new construction.
“The need for a better solution has been there for quite some time; with completion of the project, our Public Housing office staff have an opportunity to better serve the people of Bethel,” Dan Fauske said AHFC CEO and executive director.
The original public housing administrative office space was built in 1980 and offered no common areas for residents, limited parking, insufficient working and storage space, and was a facility that reached the end of its useful and functional life.
AHFC worked with the City of Bethel to combine the two AHFC owned lots to construct the new facility, which was built under the direction of the AHFC/PHD Construction Department and Wolverine Supply Inc., of Wasilla. It includes expanded office and maintenance space for public housing property management, and space for community use. The building utilizes energy-efficient construction and a space frame foundation system to withstand the adverse soil conditions of the region.
AHFC staff will give tours of the new facility during the grand opening. Light refreshments will be served; the public is invited to attend.
AHFC is a self-supporting public corporation with offices in 16 communities statewide. It provides statewide financing for multi-family complexes and single-family homes, with special loan options for low- to moderate-income borrowers, veterans, teachers, health care professionals, and those living in rural areas of the state.
AHFC also provides energy and weatherization programs, low-income rental assistance in 17 communities, and programs for the homeless and those seeking to become self-sufficient. AHFC has contributed more than $1.9 billion to Alaska’s state budget revenues through cash transfers, capital projects and debt-service payments.
