People of Akiachak smile proudly Tuesday after the installation of a Kids Don’t Float (KDF) Loaner Board with personal floatation devices (PFD). KDF is a statewide injury prevention program that was developed to address Alaska’s high child and youth drowning rate. It is a collaborative effort between several state and federal agencies, organizations and local grass-roots sponsors. The PDF are provided by the program and can be used by anyone in the community. Wildlife Trooper Mike Cresswell participates in the program and before a trip to Akiachak he asked local officials if they wanted to put up a loaner board. They did, and he took the materials to the village. Cresswell, along with local public safety officials and volunteers, constructed the board.
