Bethel-based Assistant District Attorney Chris Carpeneti submitted documents to the court on Jan. 15 opposing the presentation of testimony by Yup’ik culture experts in the upcoming trial of 21 area fishers arrested in June for illegal fishing, according to kyuk.org. The testimony is expected to assert that the defendants’ right to subsistence fishing is protected by the first amendment to the U.S. Constitution, Alaska State Constitution and Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The non-jury trial is set to begin April 15.
