Missing teen hunters rescued
On the Y-K Delta
Two teenage hunters were reported missing out of Bethel on Jan. 28. Bethel Search and Rescue contacted state troopers about 5:30 p.m. that Phillip Charlie, 18, and Sam Charlie, 16, who were hunting and travelling on snowmachines, had not returned home after contacting family members by cell phone at 4 p.m. that they were headed back to Bethel due to deteriorating weather. The youth contacted family members on Jan. 29 to report that they were OK, but lost. Ground and air teams from Search and Rescue, Alaska State Troopers and Alaska Army National Guard were dispatched to search the area. Troopers spotted the hunters at about 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 30. With the coordinates of their location a National Guard crew in a UH-60 Black Hawk recovered the youth and transported them to Bethel where they were check and treated at the local hospital.
