Plane crashes on river

On the Y-K Delta


A small airplane with three people aboard crashed on the Kuskokwim River Feb. 5 near Upper Kalskag. The three men aboard were injured in the accident. The Cessna 172, owned and operated by Kuspuk School District, left Kalskag for Aniak just before 4:30 p.m., according to troopers. The weather had deteriorated upon takeoff and the pilot was attempting to fly along the river when it crashed onto the ice covered river and flipped over. Aboard were the pilot Steve Bruckner, 44 of Aniak, and passengers Brian Foley, 52 of Aniak, and Roy Guernsey, 55 of Anchorage. Local volunteer rescuers, medical clinic personnel and a trooper responded to the accident. Guernsey was medevaced to Anchorage, and Bruckner and Foley were medevaced to Yukon Kuskokwim Health Center. All were listed to be in stable condition on Feb. 6.
