Warriors bring home Classic crown
The Bethel Warriors varsity boy’s basketball teams overwhelmed the teams from Delta Junction and Homer to take the battle to their hosts, the Seward Seahawks at the annual Seahawk Classic. The three-day contest began for the Warriors with the Delta Junction Huskies on Feb. 7 when the Bethel Boys came out on top 56-39. The Bethel Lady Warriors game went the other way, with the Delta Lady Huskies picking up a 56-41 win on their way to the top spot for the tournament.
However, the Lady Warriors went two for three overall, beating the Kodiak JV Girls on Friday, 35-29 and then the Seward Lady Seahawks 40-34 in a cliff hanger overtime win on the final day of the tournament. In the four-minute overtime period Bethel doubled every Seward point to take the 28-28 game to a 40-34 final tally.
The Bethel boys didn’t miss an opportunity, defeating the Homer Mariners on Friday, 86-16, and knocking the hosting Seahawks down to second place on the last day of the event. Carlie Romer, Austin Miller and Ito Naneng turned up the pressure on both the offensive and defensive fronts and the Seahawks were hard pressed to keep up. Taylor Hoffman achieved an impressive number of completions, pulling out double digit scoring overall along with Romer and Naneng.
The final game of the tournament ended with the Bethel Warriors over the Seahawks 75-43 for the win and first place overall.
