Murkowski hears subsistence concerns
U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski hosted a Senate hearing on subsistence April 2 in Bethel. At the hearing over 25 people spoke and more submitted written testimony, according to KYUK. The people spoke the closures to subsistence fishing on the rivers last year while the kings were running and their frustration at not being able the harvest the foods traditional in their culture. They questioned the priority of closing subsistence fisheries over managing bycatch. The Senator said the testimony will help her explain the fisheries problems in Alaska to her colleagues in Washington, D.C.
