Supporters turn out for World No Tobacco Day Fun Run
Every year on May 31 the World Health Organization and partners everywhere around the world celebrate World No Tobacco Day. It is a day set aside to create awareness on the health risks and problems linked with tobacco use and also advocate for better policies to reduce it.
Bethel was not left out of the celebrations, and it has become customary for the Delta Tobacco Control Alliance, and The Nicotine Control and Research Department at YKHC to mark the event with a 5-kilometer fun run. This year it was held on Saturday, June 1 and 40 people signed up for the run, and with volunteers, family and friends cheering on, they completed the course.
World No Tobacco Day remains very important because tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death and disease worldwide. In America about two out of every 10 people use tobacco and in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta that number is three times more, that means about six out of every 10 people. But with good policies, more education and awareness, that number can drop.
Organizers thank everyone involved with the run, and encourage the continuation of support for a healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips to consider – eat healthy, exercise and, of course, stay tobacco free.
