Waterfowl harvesting closed

On the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta the spring waterfowl season closes for 30 days by regulation during the initiation of nesting of migratory birds, announced the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service on June 5.

Field reports by service staff have reported that the initiation of nesting has occurred for the waterfowl and other migratory birds.

No harvest of birds or eggs of migratory birds may occur from June 10 to July 10. The closure is designed to protect migratory birds from the period when egg laying begins through the principal nesting period.

Special closure for Cackling Canada geese and Black Brant are also is effect (for both birds and eggs) from the time when egg laying begins until young birds are fledged. The closure for Cackling Canada geese and Black Brant is June 10 to July 20.

This closure comes after consultation with the Association of Village Council Presidents Waterfowl Conservation Committee and field biologists for the service.
