Salmon Management Working Group slams hatchery idea

At a learning session hosted by the Kuskokwim River Salmon Management Working Group on Friday, working group members discussed why creating a hatchery to boost ailing king salmon numbers would not be a good idea.

According to working group members, a hatchery would be massively expensive, would distort the genetics of the wild salmon which could decrease survival, could distort the numbers and accidentally cause overfishing and there have been examples of hatchery fish going out to the ocean and never coming back – either due to death or other reasons.

Currently, members said they want to stay the course on conserving and restricting fishing rather than open up a hatchery.
